SalesForce Buys Ruby Based Platform For $212 million

SalesForce has announced the acquisition of Heroku, which is a very popular cloud platform for the development of Ruby Web apps. They reportedly paid $212 million by cash purchases.

Marc Benioff the CEO of SalesForce said

The next era of cloud computing is social, mobile and real-time. I call it Cloud 2. Ruby is the language of Cloud 2, and Heroku is the leading Ruby application platform-as-a-service for Cloud 2 that is fueling this growing community. We think this acquisition will uniquely position salesforce.com as the cornerstone for the next generation of app developers.

This development now seems to be a part of SalesForce aggressively trying to make a mark on the cloud scene. The company also maintains VMForce which is an Java based enterprise cloud platform. Ruby as it is one of the most popular language for developing Web apps. Heroku as it is hosts 100,000 apps on the platforms. Salesforce will now look to be the leader of the next generation of Cloud.
