Joshua has come up with very “specific” and very interesting rumors from “reliable sources” about the Google Phone:
1. the phone will run on a Linux distro

2. It will not only have Java Virtual Machine embedded but also the operating system and all the phone applications with be Java based too. The performance is said to be “very responsive.”

3. The browser for the phone will be new (though some say it’s based on the WebKit core, which Safari is built atop) and will tout “pan-and-browse” capabilities.

4. It will have multiple form factor all with QWERTY keyboards. Source: GigaOM

I am obviously most interested in number 2. Having Java on Google Phone will be a tremendous boost for mobile Java platform and developer community. Logically all of these is a strong possibility and I would not be the least bit surprised with an official announcement to this effect by Q4 2007. My only request to Google would be that it should be internationally available and not tied to any specific mobile service provider.
