WordPress 2.5 Released in Error, Withdrawn & Released Again

WordPress 2.5 was released with lots of fanfare and lots of defects. It looked in the trac and it said at that time that the milestone was completed 3 minutes ago. The release was announced on wordpress.org:

WordPress 2.5
WordPress 2.5, the culmination of six months of work by the WordPress community, people just like you. The improvements in 2.5 are numerous, and almost entirely a result of your feedback: multi-file uploading, one-click plugin upgrades, built-in galleries, customizable dashboard…

However something changed suddenly. I just refreshed the trac and it now says - “Due in 7 hours (03/29/08)”

The WordPress 2.5 release announcement link has been withdrawn. The page now says: “Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.”

However the main page still links to this blog post.

WordPress blog now shows an old post from 26th March - Screencast and WordPress 2.5 RC2.

What happened? Will someone from WordPress care to explain?

WordPress Forum members too realize something is amiss:

Pould: Having downloaded the release of 2.5, my admin menu is now devoid of most items, only displaying Manage, Design, Comments and Podpress (a plugin) on the left hand side. There are no submenu items anywhere to be seen.

I noticed that my installation is reporting 2.5 as a development version, so was this release done in error?

Any ideas peeps?

Update: Track now says: Completed 11 minutes ago (03/29/08 16:41:16)
Also the release announcement link is now working again. Looks like all is fine again.

A quick sort of 2.5 shows this last minute ticket:

https://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6436

Maybe that had something to do with it.
