Pew study: In the news, Apple is beating Google

NEW YORK — A new study finds that Apple is beating all other technology companies, at least in terms of media coverage.

According to a study released Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, news stories about Apple Inc. accounted for 15.1 percent of tech stories between June 2009 and June 2010. Google Inc. followed with 11.4 percent, Twitter with 7.1 percent, Facebook with 4.8 percent and Microsoft Corp. with 3 percent.

The study also found that media coverage is generally torn when it comes to technology.

The most popular slant in coverage is that technology makes life more productive. Second most popular were stories that suggested the Internet is not secure.

The study analyzed coverage of 52 outlets, including newspapers, Web sites, TV and radio.
