evdoBSNL has moved one step ahead in the process of bringing 3G to India. BSNL has introduced EVDO data services on CDMA 2000 1X technology. The EVDO stands for “Evolution-Data” or “Evolution-Data Optimized”. It is an internet service standard for wireless internet connections with speeds ranging upto 2.4Mbps.

The EVDO, 3G service is developed by QUALCOMM. The wireless broadband is available in few selected cities. BSNL EDDO modem is USB based, and can be used in Desktop computers as well as Laptops. All EVDO modems in BSNL store is preactivated and can be taken and used anytime. Two types of EVDO services are available.

1. EVDO rental

You can take it for rent, test it and if find it satisfying, go for purchase. Initially you have to pay — Rs. 1000 security deposit and Rs.500 activation fee + 1 month rental + tax initially. The deposit money will be refunded, in case you return the modem.

2. EVDO service by purchasing the modem/device.

You can buy EVDO modem without going for rent.

Speed:- 100bps to 188 kbps

Usually 10 to 30 kbps - very slow

EVDO work well in morning, evening and night. Moreover, you will be astounded to find EVDO giving you upto 2mbps in rainy days, provided the signal is full.

The signal will be high when you place the antena in the direction of the tower. Place the card in the corner of the room in the direction of the tower. Place the antenna little bit wide to the opposite direction of the device (card) but aim it to the tower and place very close to the corner wall just inches from the wall.

It will take about 2 to 5 hrs to recognize your card for the first time.

Roaming facility is also available with this EVDO datacard. The charges of unlimited internet usage through EVDO Cards are as under :
1. Activation charges — 500

2. Charges for Cards

i) Sale Price of ICC Card in Rs. — 3500
ii) Fixed monthly charges for card — 200
iii) Security Deposit (refundable) — 1000

4. Free internet usage — Unlimited

5. Roaming facility (Intra & Inter Circle) — As per technical feasibility

Will BSNL EVDO be able work on Android OS? Now a days there are lot of news about Apple iPad or similar iPad from other companies. Can we use BSNL EVDO on such small computers. I know it will need them to have USB port. SO if a iPad has USB Port then will BSNL EVDO work on it if iPad has Android OS?
