Is Flock (Browser) Ready for Prime Time Yet?

Flock created quite a buzz sometime back as a potential Firefox killer. It was that illegitimate child of Firefox which wanted to kill the progenitor. It started off with quite some promise and yet…

Flock is built upon Firefox / Mozilla codebase and yet it was incompatible at plugin level (last I checked) which didn’t make much sense to me. Flock wanted to provide integrated blogging experience and had some strange relationship with WordPress which lead to much of it untimely popularity. Flock appears to have not too many core differentiators and yet their benefits are not leveraged. If that sounds corporate speak then let me clarify with one simple example. Flock allows integrated blogging. However its capabilities are nowhere near even basic WordPress 1.5 admin interface. With a offline blogging tool like Flock I expect much more. I found integration lacking at several levels. Flock allows photo sharing and yet… You get the picture.

Flock is an attempt at integration of diverse services and yet without the strong focus of best of breed services.

Today Flock site mentions - “We’re not quite ready for prime time…”. That is a very accurate statement. I think Flock has lots of potential but it created a marketing snafu by creating a buzz before prime time which it couldn’t well sustain. A second coming would be much harder.

I would be happy to review it again. Do let me know when it is released.

You’re quite right: our developer previews are not ready for prime time, hence the name. ;)

Our first beta release, Cardinal, is coming out later this month. We appreciate your feedback now, please give it a try then and let us know what you think.
