Do not tell me about Windows and its bugs. No matter what I try doing new, half the time is consumed in detecting the bugs and fixing them. Today, I was trying to use a remote machine from another computer by remote access facility of WIndows XP with SP2. So when I tried to operate VNC, almost immediately I had two bugs stopping me.

Problem-1

1. As soon as I tried to use VNC, the Windows Firewall turned itself on automatically and it prevented me from using VNC application and God knows why.

Solution

To disable Windows Firewall, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Go to Run.
  3. Type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
  4. On the General tab, click Off
  5. Click OK.

Problem-2

Okay, I got rid of the firewall problem and started using VNC and then realized that annoying automatic update option is set ON because of this. You may say, automatic update is rather something that is recommended but sorry I find it as annoying as anything. Anyway, I had to solve this problem as well.

Solution

If you want to turn off the automatic updates, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select Turn off Automatic Updates.
  3. Click OK.

Or

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel , and then double-click System.
  2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click Turn off automatic updates want to update my computer manually.

And you are done!

Disable Both the Services at Once

The Security Center service in Windows XP Service Pack 2 monitors system security settings and configurations. (firewall, anti-virus and Automatic Updates status). To disable the service, use the following steps:

  • Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
  • Locate the Security Center entry in the list
  • Double-click Security Center and set it’s Startup type to Disabled.
