Dear Sir, Thankyou for your response. As per your advise will get in touch with AIIMS and let you know . All the relevant tests were conducted at a couple of reputed hospitals in Bombay but the causes still remain unknown. However there does seem to be definite reprieve ( swelling ) on intake of Aurvedic medicines, though it's very early to comment. Will let you know on the impact of Aurvedic medicine so that other Liver Cirrhotic Patients can avail the benefits. Regards G Shetty |

Everyone, I have finally launched The Stem Cell Blog where we will cover exclusively Stem Cell research and news worldwide. I will be adding several articles over the weekend. Looking forward for your feedback. We will also cover topics which people asked here like liver cirrhosis, muscular dystrophy treatment etc. Let us all hope for a brighter future with stem cell therapy. Best, Angsuman |

Dear Goverdhan, I am very sad to hear about his condition. Could this be related to Hepatitis C infection? I would suggest that you get a second opinion from another reputed Hospital. Technically yes. Stem cell can replace liver cells. I suggest you contact AIIMS at the address given in my post and explain them your situation. I will be posting an article or two about it this weekend on The Stem Cell Blog. |

Dear Sir, One of my close relative is suffering from Liver Cirrhosis for the past several years. His Kidney and LFT test is good and so is his CBC count, but doctors are surprised on his cirrhotic condition and unable to ascertain the exact cause. Dear Priyanka, I think you should contact Dr. Venugopal at AIIMS. AIIMS contact numbers are: 91-11-26588500, 91-11-26588700, 91-11-26589900 Request to directly speak to him. If he is not available ask when he will be available. Based on my past experience it shouldn't be much problem. Explain your situation in details to him. Get the actual type diagnosed properly. It never pays to delay treatment of any disease, speaking from hard experience. For some type of MD treatment options are available like for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy corticosteriod (like wysolone) are offered as guideline for treatment. I think you should always go for healthy well-balanced diet. Wish you good luck. Angsuman |

Dear Sir, This is in response to the article in The Times of India dated 25-Feb-05, regarding stem cell injection. Sir, my cousin sister 10 years is having symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy, though she is quite active ,she walks fine, goes to school, plays, she is quite intelligent too.But since her birth one of her calf was quite stiff & tight, she used to walk on her toes , she had difficulty in walking up the stairs. We have done her CPK test ,the count is also quite high.Currently she is undergoing an Ayurvedic Treatment as Allopathic could not offer any treatment. We have not done her biopsy as yet, so we don't know which MD she is suffering from. Sir, I want to know Is Muscular Dystrophy serious in Girls also as in boys? And can it be cured by injecting stem cells,as one 21- year old Muscular Dystrophy Patient has undergone a stem cell treatment under your supervision. Sir ,we are desperately looking forward for an appointment with you, my Uncle Aunt are very depressed I wish an appointment with you can answer lot of our queries. Sir I would be very glad if you could tell me what sort of food she should take, we are giving her protein rich diet, I want to know what all food contents can be added in her diet. Looking forward for an positive response & appointment. |

The AIIMS people (on customer service) are unable to provide even the basic information and are just asking patients to fax or email about the patient’s health condition… I would like to know if the AIIMS currently providing treatment for Muscular Dystrophy ? or is it still in the clinical trial phase? In that case too I would like to participate/volunteer in such clinical trials/ treatment program so how should I approach them? (Dr. Venugopal mentioned to have successfully treated neurological disorders like muscular dystrophy (Ref. 26 feb TOI)) If you can please look into the matter and answer. Please help. With high Hopes and Regards Hemant |

It is an active area of research. Keep an eye on this blog. I will inform as and when I see something of interest on this topic. Stem cell has the potential to provide cure for wide array of diseases. What is needed is support by governments in different countries, something which is unfortunately lacking in USA. India however is going forward with stem cell research and so are several other countries. |

@K. Meharnath I think you should immediately visit a nephrologist in your area for your Mother. Also check her urea & creatinine (the neprologist will tell you the same). I am not sure what you mean by swollen with pus. Swelling is normally due to fluid retention. Is she on any diuretic like Lasix? The treatment mentioned here is conducted by Dr. Venugopal at AIIMS. Please check my comment above for phone numbers of AIIMS. I have no idea of the pricing but I can tell you the waiting list will be long. You can also look at benfotiamine to reduce diabetic side-effects. |
