TOKYO — Electronics giant Sony Corp. reported its first annual net loss in 14 years and forecast a bigger loss this year, saying the pressure from sliding sales, competition in gadget prices and a strong yen was expected to continue. Meanwhile, Sanyo Electric Co., which is being acquired by larger Japanese rival Panasonic Corp., reported an annual loss because of declining sales, the strong yen and rising material costs, but expects to muster a small profit this fiscal year.
Court orders America's Cup showdown in February
NEW YORK — A New York judge on Thursday ordered America's Cup champion Alinghi of Switzerland to face American challenger BMW Oracle Racing in a rare one-on-one showdown in February. Justice Shirley Werner Kornreich of the Supreme Court of the State of New York also ruled that BMW Oracle Racing needed to promptly submit a measurement certificate for its 90-foot trimaran.
WASHINGTON - The numbers of Indians and other Asians and Latinos in America's Silicon Valley continued to surge from 2007 to 2008 even as the population growth of the two ethnic groups unexpectedly slowed nationwide. For years, Santa Clara County's diverse population - with more minorities than whites - has served as a pointer for the rest of the US, but the latest data released by the US Census Bureau Thursday is expected to push back the projected date that minorities will outnumber whites across the US by a decade.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Companies based in the Technopark IT industrial park here will join hands with the Kerala government to strengthen the AIDS awareness campaign in the state, an industry official said here Thursday. The Group of Technopark Companies (GTECH), a body representing the chief executives of the Technopark firms, has adopted a corporate policy on HIV/AIDS that calls for strengthening the awareness campaign among among the member companies and employees, the group secretary, Satish Babu, said.
