I tried to cancel Aol and got nowhere...fast. I told them I was emigrating and they wanted to know when, where and if I planned to return, doh !! I usually paid by my bank account card automatically online. I ended up telling my bank I had lost my card (to be on the safe side) so the bank cancelled it and sent me a new one with a different number(which they do in the UK)just to make sure they took no more money. Aol soon sent me an e-mail saying I had not paid, so after all that Aol still had not cancelled. The lengths you have to go to just to cancel. What part of NO does Aol NOT understand?

I used method number two, and it works!!! I followed it to the letter, and I got my cancellation within a few minutes. (I am keeping my cancellation confirmation number handy until my new credit card statement comes through, just to make sure they actually follow through.) Advice: DON'T waste time with the aol websites; they are designed to prevent you from getting a phone number or accomplishing a cancellation.

Thanks so much. I just called to cancel my AOL account and can't thank you enough for the help. I forgot to look at the timer before I hung up but it couldn't have take more than 5 minutes. The unemployed card works pretty well too. Try it. It worked for me. It also happens to be true. Thanks again! Now if the auto pay gets cancelled in a resonable time I'll be so happy.

Hey I tried to cancel my aol account via the phone initially and was told they were experiencing technical difficulties accessing my account eventhough I went through all of the verifications they asked to pull up the account, anyway I was told to call back later or go online to "aol keyword cancel", that didn't work either. After reading your suggestions here, I called back and used the sold my computer and moving out of the country scenario and IT WORKED! I was able to have my account cancelled immediately. THANKS!!

Just go to AOL click on customer support and search CANCEL ACCOUNT, then it will take you to bill.aol.com and you can change your account after answering a security question. They will send a confirmation email within 10 days. At least that's what it said.

AOL used to have a feature wherein you could take your screenname to a new account, if, for example, you and a another person had an account together and you wanted to cut ties with that person, keep your screenname, and start your own account. Does anybody know if this is still possible? I have a free AOL account, and that does not include any type of customer service. My ex-boyfriend would like to keep his screenname but I don't prefer to look at it every time I sign on to my account. Thanks!

From ALL the reading I have done,(Plus my own most recent experience today of the letter I sent AOL to their posted address being returned to me as UNDELIVERABLE. 40 more cents wasted due to them.) it seems to me that how long it takes on the phone to get them to tell you that you are cancelled is not the problem. The problem is whether you are REALLY CANCELLED, which you won't know until you stop getting billed. So let's stop saying "I did it! It only took 4 minutes!". Cause you haven't achieved anything until you really aren't getting charged anymore. Otherwise the nightmare continues and the "successful" phone call with them was just more wasted time. I'm ready to try continuous faxing. Every day I'll fax them, and if I don't get a letter of confirmation the next day, I fax again..Repeat daily.

I have used AOL for about 8 years. I now have 2 small children and just don't have the time or the energy to use the computer like I use to. I called AOL to cancel my account and the customer service representative gave me the run around. I am going to try faxing the cancellation notice and see if this will get some action.

Aol are the worst for shutting down accounts. I have had up to five computers online here p.w. access only. So no one else could use it. But the kids get this friggin AOL disc from just about anywhere, put it in and because my credit cards are on file boom I get billed for delinquint accounts from years ago because the jerkoffs never cancelled it. I won't have any more of those in my house. If I find one I shoot it full of holes before I burn it in the wood stove. Maybe they need to be silver bullets.Aol we are done with you.

Montgomery wrote to me via contact form his experinces with cancelling aol account in under 3 minutes: Hi! Just thought I would let you know that I cancelled my AOL account in about three minutes in this manner. I went through all of the bull from the automated attendant then was sent to a customer service rep. After, of course, repeating all of the previously requested information I explained that I could no longer afford the services. She (the vile rep) told me I was paid until the next month and then explained that by going on AOL job search I could find a job that would allow me to afford AOL. She asked if this would be helpful. I (unwittingly and just because) said yes. At this point she noted that I was on the cheapest version available of AOL and that I would receive my bill for ONLY $9.95 per month. Then she says “OK?” I said “No! I don’t want the account. I am through talking! Cancel the account!” Then I hung up. I then got online and discoverded all of the horror stories about cancelling AOL. My thoughts ran to words that I won’t type to you. Much to my surprise when I called a few minutes later to (I figured) recancel the account it was already cancelled. The short version would be tell them to cancel it and that is it and then hang up on them!!!

I DID IT! (I Hope) Took 9 minutes. Thanks for the wisdom I gleaned from many of the testimonials. I set my expectations low for the phone call. Called that "other phone#"....a few transfers, some waiting, and a fairly pleasant guy canceled account for me and switched it to free. No further charge to my VISA. Said he would send an e-mail confirmation to me to that effect. I am hesitant to go to aol e-mail, as I am afraid of being duped somehow. Is mine an unrealistic concern? Anybody have advice/experience? Diane

See, their 'brightness'? I called, I faxed...over and over and over! Went to Netzero, AOl never billed again! Months now, NO BILLS...But, how is it, my service is still on, and NO DEBIT card is used with them anymore??? SCAREY!!!!! Who is funding this account? And why me? The automated voice menu is annoying as all hell, but the live agent I spoke to (Dave) was friendly and helpful. I told Dave that I needed to cancel my account because I don't use it anymore. As he launched into the mandatory "saves" scripting I mentioned that I had worked for AOL from 2000 to 2003 (which is true), and politely asked that we cut to the chase -- which we did. 4-minute phone call.

I just cancelled. It took one phone call to this number - 1-800-827-6364. Total time 6 minutes. It was all automated and I received a cancellation number. I tried to go to AOL.com after I cancelled and it asked me if I wanted to re-join using my old account, so I guess it worked. I feel so FREE!!! I think they're aware of the frustration and have changed their cancellation tactics to make it easier. They have enough enemies already!

I just canceled. One phone call and it took 5 minutes. When asked why I was cancelling, I told him we had decided as a family to get rid of our computer. He tried to sell me and I listened patiently, but then I told him that we were getting rid of the computer and getting completely off email. He tried to sell me one more time about access from library or work, and I told him again we were getting completely off email and then he cancelled the account and gave me a cancellation number. They also told me it would take 7-10 days for a written copy in email to come to me. What a crock--they could generate that while on the phone if they wanted to. Still, pretty painless. I've made a note to follow up, because I don't trust them.

July 2, 2007: 6:58 am
@Laura If losing email addresses is your only concern then I suggest that you should simply create new addresses at GMail. However in this you will lose all your existing emails. Also you will have to send your new email addresses to all your friends and relatives. The upside is that you will be free from AOL forever or at least till Google lasts.

Ron
July 2, 2007: 6:46 am
If you are concerned about being billed after you cancell AOL, call the credit card company tell them you have lost your card. In about a week you will have a new card with a new number and AOL will not be on the new card, as simple as that.

i was wondering if there was any way to change the master account to another screen name without having the master account password. my father died a few months ago, he was the master user. my mom called aol and they said that they couldn't do it- that my mom would have to cancel our service and start over meaning we would lose all of our email addresses. is there something we can tell them that will get them to do it or is it even possible?

Im about to cancel my AOL. I faxed the request and told them my laptop was stolen and that I have no reason to have the AOL service if I dont have a computer to use it on. In addition, my parents have a computer but its THEIR computer so I have no right to add a service to it. I don't think there is a way around THAT reason!! If they refuse to honor my request, the Better Business Bureau will do it for me.

I had cancelled my aol account some time in january or early february over the phone since I was going away for army training than Afghanistan for a year long deployment. I looked up my bank statesment online and found a payment had been made to aol as recently as last month for a service I thought I no longer had... funny how this whole cancellation thing works. I am in a forward operating base with out fax machines, I do have internet that I am paying way too much for and access to morale phones but I'm suppose to use the phone card time talking to family and friends on aol support to re-cancel my account... again?? do you know if aol customer support has an actual e-mail address that I can send an e-mail to? aol was fun and all but the fun isn't there and neither is the love.

OH MY GOD! I had no idea what I was getting into. I opened the aol account 3 years ago, gave the computer away to one of my kids 2 years ago, and cancelled, or I thought I did, the account. NOT SO.AOL has been debiting my checking account 11.95 per month for over 2 years,I have called several times to try and resolve this. Finally, just this morning spoke with someone whom spoke good enough english to understand how"frustrated" I was, I requested a refund for the 24 months and they are sending me $23.90 instead of the $286.80 that I have been billed, IS THIS A JOKE OR WHAT! The coustomer services rep that I spoke with assures that as of today I'am no longer a member of AOL> Thank the Good Lord above. Former AOL member Jacki Deas

I canceled AOL 9 months ago. They attempted to bill me for another month after the fact. This was disputed by by credit card company. AOL then turned me over to collections 9 months later. They never sent a bill or prior notice. When I called to complain I was treated rudley and told that there was nothing they could do just pay the $23.90. I refuse to ever deal with AOL again.
