LONDON - Colds and flu have overtaken sex as the most viewed item on the web, as those affected are flocking to ‘Asthma UK’ website, since it was updated a few years ago.

‘Asthma UK’ is the charity dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the 5.4 million asthmatics in the country.

Colds and flu, brought on by the current freezing spell, are reported to have affected three quarters of the number - a potential recipe for disaster.

However, Vikki Knowles, asthma nurse specialist at ‘Asthma UK’, advised such patients to take several steps to control the disorder throughout the winter.

For example, taking your prescribed medicines regularly, without interrupting treatment just because you don’t experience any symptoms.

If the cold air is creating problems, take a couple of puffs of your inhaler before going outside, according to a release of ‘Asthma UK’.

Keep your inhaler with you at all times, you never know when you might need it. Wrap up well and wear a scarf over your nose and mouth - this will help to warm up the air before you breathe it in.

Knowles advised extra care when exercising in cold weather. Warming up for 10 to 15 minutes should be done with a couple of puffs of the inhaler before you start.

Further information can be found at asthma.org.uk, which includes a service called ‘Asthma Triggers Tips’ which after a few simple questions can provide a tailored advice about people’s personal triggers and how to manage them.

‘It is important to make sure you have your asthma reviewed at least once a year - sooner if your symptoms are getting worse or you have severe asthma,’ Knowles said.
