The web hosting service of Yahoo! Geocities is scheduled to close on 26 October 2009. The website would be deleted and its service would be no longer available to the public. In over a decade of its service, Geocities had become immensely popular among internet users and it also boasts of having a rich internet history.

The web hosting service was launched in the year 1994 by David Bohnett and John Rezner in Southern California. Over the span of next few years, many major companies including Yahoo! started investing in the site and with new paid premium services coming into existence, the site gradually saw its escalating growth. Around five years later in 1999, it was bought by Yahoo! which successfully run it for around 10 years. Finally on April 2009, Yahoo! stopped accepting any new registrations for the site although existing accounts continued to remain active for the time being. Later, in the month of June it was officially declared that the services of Geocities would be terminated from 26 October this year.

However, no specific reason was cited as to why it was all of a sudden decided that the service would be terminated but reportedly the decision was taken as the service was considered to be outdated by many. In a statement that was released recently by Yahoo!, it was stated that although Geocities is being terminated, the internet service provider would launch a host of other services that would enable its users to keep in touch with family and friends across the world and at the same time facilitate sharing of a variety of interests as well as host of different activities.
