Summary Box: Military GPS glitch

THE PROBLEM: As many as 10,000 U.S. military GPS receivers couldn’t lock on to satellite signals after a software change in January.

THE SOLUTION: The Air Force and a private contractor developed a temporary solution and are distributing a permanent fix.

BIG PICTURE: The military has more than 800,000 GPS receivers in weapons, planes, ships and other gear, and experts say the January problem is a warning to keep them secure.

(This version CORRECTS to ’satellite signals’ not ’satellite systems’ in 1st graf.)
