MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- This Republic Day, the financial capital of the country got to see the first test run of the technologically advanced, super fast monorail. Flagged off by the Chief minister of the state, Ashok Chavan, the run was a successful one, and as the Minister himself commented, it was a gift to the citizens of the state from the government on the occasion of Republic Day. The Mumbai monorail details show that it was only a test run, and that the project is not yet complete.

However, as per the Mumbai monorail details given by the government, the monorail would be available for public transport by the end of the current year. At least, a part of the project, that is, Phase 1 would surely be complete. A joint venture of Larsen and Toubro and the Malaysian Scomi Group, and a Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority initiative, the project is expected to cater to at least three lakh people. It is also expected that the monorail would be successful in becoming a form of daily transport.

The monorail is the first of its kind in the entire country. As per the reports provided by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, the monorail is an “engineering marvel,” and the only one so far to be undertaken by the government of any state. The entire project would be completed by the end of 2011. After completion, the monorail would run from Jacob Circle to Chembur, a route 19.4 km long. This year, it would run from Wadala to Chembur, and Phase 2 would cover Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala, as per the Mumbai monorail details available.
