Summary Box: Dell lets 3Par go to HP; analysts say PC maker needs mix of technology and time

Summary Box: What’s Dell to do after 3Par?
DEAL UNDONE: Dell Inc. surrendered the contest for data-storage maker 3Par Inc. to Hewlett-Packard Co. Thursday.
DELL’S DILEMMA: Dell has been slower than HP to branch out from the business of selling computers, which has grown less profitable as component costs have climbed and as PC makers have raced to rock-bottom prices.
ANALYSTS’ ADVICE: Continue acquiring data-center technology makers, says Morningstar analyst Michael Holt. And give it time, said Gartner analyst Adrian O’Connell. IBM, HP and other rivals have spent much longer earning the trust of the biggest enterprise customers.
