Summary Box: HP, Dell volley offers for 3Par

QUICK RETURN: Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. continued to bid on data-storage maker 3Par Thursday. HP raised its offer to $27 per share, or about $1.69 billion, topping the $24.30-per-share bid that Dell made public earlier in the day.

SECOND SET: Dell made a first offer of 18 per share for 3Par on Aug. 16. HP sparked the bidding contest with a counteroffer Monday.

THE TROPHY: Dell and HP hope to beef up their storage divisions as part of broader “cloud computing” efforts. They face stiff storage competition from NetApp and EMC.
