SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- The Terrafugia Transition has cleared one of its biggest hurdles by getting an approval from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) for classification as a light sports aircraft. The news could mean a great progress for everyone who dreams of flying over the drudging traffic. The Terrafugia Transition is a new age light aircraft that will also ply on road as well.
The makers of the Terrafugia Transition were unable to fit in the safety measures like structural cage, airbags and crumple zone within the standard weight for light sports aircraft given by the FAA. After a lot of convincing the FAA has approved of the aircraft as a light sports vehicle. this implies that getting a license for the Terrafugia Transition would mean much less paperwork and just 20 hours of logged flying time. The aircraft will reportedly reach speeds of 65 mph on road and 115 mph with wings out. It can fly around 400 miles before needing another refuel of unleaded fuel. It will also carry a total load of 450 pounds and will need a runway that is at least one-third of a mile long. However, the aircraft is expected to fit in a standard garage.
The estimated price of the vehicle is approximately $200000 and if it clears all the safety and other tests in the future, the Terrafugia Transition could well be hitting the showrooms net year. Several people have paid $10000 as deposit for the vehicle already. According to the fans of the concept, the advantage of the aircraft may not only be avoidance of traffic but also the option of driving home on encountering bad weather during flying.
