Los Angeles- Scientists at NASA have discovered concrete evidence about the existence of water on the moon. They have long suspected that the shadowed craters of the moon might be cold enough to contain water in the frozen form. They have also gathered evidence over the last decade or so that proved that there is ice underground at the poles. NASA’s latest “moon crash mission” that sent the LCROSS to the moon, confirmed that there is water on the moon, in fact, quite a lot of it.

The LCROSS, or the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, crashed into the moon, sending debris flying a mile high. A rocket was then launched that searched among the debris for the presence of water. The mission have been highly successful as the scientists have found almost 25 gallons, and they hope that there might be much more. Examinations of the debris is still on for other possible discoveries. Scientists attribute the presence of water in the moon to various external and internal factors. They deduce that water might have formed due to solar winds, huge molecular clouds or comets, or some internal activity of the moon itself.

The discovery of water on the moon opens a host of vistas for the astrophysicists. The dream of building a lunar space station seems more possible with the presence of some life supporting element. Moreover, scientists feel that they might be able to discover the secrets of the evolution of the solar system if the age of the water on the moon is found to be old enough.
