Britain’s James Bond spies to be sacked soon
By ANISunday, September 19, 2010
LONDON - It’s bad news for Britain’s James Bond spies as the government has decided to slash spending on counter terrorism abroad so more money can be poured into defending the country against cyber attacks.
Jobs are expected to be lost at MI6 as the number of spies abroad is cut - while rival home security service MI5 will escape cuts but have its budget frozen.
Details of the move are contained in the Strategic Security Review, which concludes big changes need to be made to Britain’s spy budgets.
“You will see some trenchant cuts at the top, a freeze for MI5 and some tough funding cuts for MI6,” News of the World quoted a senior Cabinet Office source as saying.
“It’s unrealistic to make substantial cuts to MI5 ahead of the Olympics - but its funding has doubled in 10 years. Those increases are over.” (ANI)
