How the major stock indexes fared on Thursday
Tech shares pulled the market higher again Thursday, a day after stocks surged on a strong forecast from chip maker Intel Corp. The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced for the seventh straight day and closed at its highest level since October as traders anticipated strong reports after the bell from Internet search company Google Inc. and computer maker International Business Machines Corp. Earnings from both companies beat estimates.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 95.61, or 1.1 percent, to 8,711.82.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 8.06, or 0.9 percent, to 940.74.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 22.13, or 1.2 percent, to 1,885.03.
For the week:
The Dow is up 565.30, or 6.9 percent.
The S&P is up 61.61, or 7.0 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 129.00, or 7.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 64.57, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P is up 37.49, or 4.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 308.00, or 19.5 percent.
