Summary Box: PC woes could mean bargains this fall

SCALING BACK: Intel Corp., whose microprocessors are inside 80 percent of the world’s personal computers, lowered its third-quarter forecast, saying demand for consumer PCs has been weaker than expected.

WHAT IT MEANS: PC makers suddenly scaled back or canceled their orders with Intel during the quarter. They are bracing for lower demand in the coming months.

WHAT CAN CONSUMERS EXPECT? Possibly deeper price cuts and other promotions beyond the incentives PC makers dangled in front of shoppers to lure them into stores during the worst of the recession.
