CHENNAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- With the introduction of HD channels, the war between several DTH service operators in India is heating up. They are now offering HD service for their existing and new users and also offering lucrative discounts to woo them. Chennai based Sun DTH is one of the leading DTH operators in the country and it claims to be the first operator to offer MPEG4 technology to the users. It recently announced the availability of its HD DTH service for the subscribers. A few days back rival Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV also announced their HD services.

The HD service offered by Sun DTH may seem lucrative for its subscribers but the ground reality is a tad different. The benefit of HD broadcasting can only be availed when the various networks also start HD transmission which they are yet to do. As of now only ESPN and National Geographic are offering HD services for the viewers. Zee group is offering two channels in HD but the transmission rights lie exclusively with Dish TV. The rival service operators are offering HD capable set top boxes too.

Transmission of HD content is still expensive and unless the number of HD TVs goes up significantly not many channels will be willing to jump on the HD bandwagon. However, SUN DTH is also offering two regional Tamil channels in HD. The other operators also admit that the demand for HD service is yet to catch up among the customers. However, wit technology changing at break neck speed there is a possibility that the next generation HDTVs will come with receiver in built.
