United Microelectronics posts jump in 1Q sales
NEW YORK — Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corp., a contract chipmaker, said Thursday its first-quarter revenue more than doubled from the year before.
It pulled in 26.7 billion Taiwanese dollars ($846.4 million), up from 10.8 billion Taiwanese dollars in the same quarter last year.
On average, analysts expected earnings of $870.4 million, according to Thomson Reuters.
In March, the last month of the quarter, the company said it had revenue of 9.5 billion Taiwanese dollars ($300.5 million), up from 4.5 billion Taiwanese dollars.
Chip makers face easy comparisons to year-earlier figures. At the beginning of 2009, the recession was hammering the industry as demand for electronics and other products that use semiconductors plunged.
