Websense reports 2nd-quarter profit, higher sales but forecasts 2009 profit below estimates

Websense posts 2Q profit, higher revenue
SAN DIEGO — Internet filtering and security software maker Websense Inc. posted a second-quarter profit Tuesday, boosted by higher sales and lower operating expenses.
The company earned $3.1 million, or 7 cents per share, up from a loss of $8.2 million, or 18 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue climbed to $79.5 million from $73 million.
On an adjusted basis, the company earned 32 cents per share and revenue totaled $84.1 million. This includes subscription revenue from past billings to customers of British Internet security company SurfControl, which Websense agreed to buy in 2007.
Analysts, on average, were expecting a profit of 31 cents per share on sales of $83.8 million, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters.
Websense expects 2009 adjusted earnings of $1.23 to $1.27 per share. It also forecast revenue of $318 million to $322 million and adjusted revenue of $334 million to $338 million.
Analysts are expecting a profit of $1.31 per share on sales of $343 million, on average.
Shares closed earlier down 30 cents at $16.05.
