IDC says chip revenue dropped 9 percent last year
NEW YORK — A new study shows worldwide semiconductor revenue fell 9 percent to $225.1 billion in 2009.
The figures, released Tuesday by market research firm International Data Corp., showed the industry’s slump was more severe in the beginning of 2009 as the recession deepened.
Because of a rebound in the second half of the year, some chip companies managed to post gains overall, IDC said.
Atheros Communications Inc., Cavium Networks Inc., Mediatek Inc., NetLogic Microsystems Inc., Synaptics Inc. and Richtek Technology Corp. all posted double-digit growth.
Some were able to take advantage of the turmoil to gain a bigger share of the market. IDC said Intel Corp., the world’s biggest supplier of microprocessors for personal computers, had a 15.2 percent market share in 2009, up by 1 percentage point from 2008.
