SRINGAR - The Community Information Centers (CIC) set up by the Union Government in various remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir is helping village girls learn the basics of Information Technology (IT) which otherwise would have remained a dream.

In a remote village of Shangus in Anantnag district, some 80 kilometers from state capital Srinagar, around 30 poor village girls are learning computer education at a very nominal price.

“The CIS, which has been started by government, is hugely beneficial to us. Computer education is very necessary along with (conventional) education in today’s competitive world,” said Asiya, a computer student.

These girls are showing keen interest in learning the courses and their parents are supporting the cause so that they can compete with the urban girls and also earn their bread and butter.

“It is very imperative to learn computer education in today’s world. It augments our education. It also helps in getting a job and performing better at the work place. The education helps us in being independent. Our parents support us in our endeavour to learn computers (course),” said Ruby Jan, a computer student.

The initiative has various diploma courses and this curriculum finds favour with the people.

“CIC, the Community Information Center, is a government scheme to provide computer education to rural students. We teach what is computer, what is Internet, how it helps, what is its use? We teach the students here very well and fee structure is very nominal,” said Farhat Saleem, in-charge of the Community Information Centre at Shangus.

Earlier, the facility was available only in cities, aimed at reducing unemployment and benefit people. By Fayaz Ahmed (ANI)
