South African Govt is planning to ban digitally distributed pornography. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs has asked the Law Commission whether a change is possible. He also had talks with the Justice Alliance for South Africa (JASA), who has written its own draft bill on the issue. Internet security expert ruled out the fact as “Madness”.
“Cars are already provided with brakes and seatbelts… There is no reason why the internet should be provided without the necessary restrictive mechanisms built into it,” said Mr Gigaba.
JASA proposes that the ban can be implemented through a filter that should cover TV, mobile and internet. Similar type of ban are in place at Australia and China. Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos said that other nations also tried to ban pornography and they were unsuccessful. He further continued it is surprising to think how democratic country like South Africa would be able to introduce such a system because the state does not have 100% control over telecommunications
Pornography is the major talking point in the latest debate in So Africa. A television channel called ETV created a big uproar when it began broadcasting adult material after midnight in 2002.
