WordPress Plugin: AdRotator - Ad Rotating Solution for your Ads (including AdSense, Clicksor, Chitika etc.)

By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News Network

User Manual
There are three simple steps to use AdRotator.

ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW

First you should upload the plugin to your wp-content/plugins directory and Activate the plugin from Plugin Manager.

Then you should create one or more files (depending on the number of Ad groups you envision) in wp-content folder with names ending with .txt. For example: banner.txt or skyscrapper.txt etc. Each files contains a specific type of Ads, normally with the same size. If you name the file indicating the type of Ad it displays, then it will be easier for you to remember later.

You can either create them on your desktop and upload them using ftp or create them directly on the server or use the Admin interface, your choice.

Each of these files contains one or more lines. Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.

What if your ad code is multi-line?
Normally Ad codes are provided in single line. However in certain cases like Google AdSense, for example, multi-line Ad codes are provided. In that case either convert the Ad code to single line manually or just take the most relevant portion of the code at the end and insert it in the file. The remaining code (which normally will be used to setup some parameters) will remain above the location (in your template file) where you would insert the function to select an ad from this ad group. So when this particular ad is chosen, then all the required code will be available and the ad will be visible. Read the AdSense discussion below for further clarification.

This can be used to display Google AdSense, LinkShare or your custom Advertisements.

For AdSense keep the top portion of the code where settings are provided, as-is in your template. Compress the last three lines (includes a javascript file) of the code, which actually inserts the Ad, in a single line and insert it in your text file.

In case you are wondering it doesn’t violate any terms of service regarding competing ads because the final HTML (at that location) displays Ads from only one source, randomly selected.

Finally you need to specify a location to display your ads. Add the code <?php echo getad('Ad File Name'); ?> (after providing the actual ad file name without the .txt extension) anywhere in your template.

The AdRotator looks for a text file as specified in the Ad file name and with a .txt extension. So if you have a code like:

Then AdRotator looks for wp-content/bannerad.txt file. If it finds it, it picks up a line randomly from the file and inserts it in your template/html.

You can alter the weight of an Ad (how often you want it displayed) by repeating the same ad line multiple times.

Note: If it cannot find the specified text file or cannot find any ad in the file then it does not insert anything.

Angsuman,

I’m the guy from WP forums who is STILL having problems making some rotating ads work. You dropped by and offered your services– which I greatly appreciate.

You say this AD ROTATOR is easy and requires little coding. I’ve read this ‘manual’ twice and must politely disagree.

1. I completed the first step, uploading and activating the plugin. Very clear.

2. You then ask me to create a .txt file. I’m pretty sure I know what you mean, but right there some people won’t. I’m a Mac user that believes I can create such a file in text edit, but I’m unsure if I need to do so in some binary or ascii mode, neither of which mean anything to me but I that I see now and again.

3. Even worse:

“Each of these files contains one or more lines. Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.” This is very vague. Lines of what? What ad code? What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.

**************

My best suggestion: create and post an example banners.txt file, with example ad code in it.

My personal request is that you DON’T force us to identically sized banners.

Any help would be greatly GREATLY appreciated,

Sounds great as an art form, but I’m also grateful for the efficiency of modern printing techniques.

And then there is the digital age, with information flying in all directions without any printing whatsoever…

I’ve been with my boyfriend for nearly 5 years and I am tired of waiting around for a marriage proposal (he’s 36 and I’m 32).
It’s really important to me and he just doesn’t get it. We’re greatest buddies, get along in each and every way, we both have children from previous associations that we both adore — the only concern I’ve may be the fact that I’ve been having to pay all the bills and rent all these years although he’s been constructing up his business. I just feel utilized and wonder constantly if he’ll take off as soon as the company can make real cash. Why doesn’t he want to marry me when he says he loves me and my son? A minimum of if we were married I’d have some monetary say in all this, and all the money I’ve been placing into our bills and the time and cash he’s put in his business would be an investment within our long term.

June 28, 2010: 3:51 pm

just wanted to let other developers know that I was not able to get this going. I created tests in adrotator.php to ensure that 1) the file name was correct, and 2) the file was being found, and 3) the length of the file was greater than nothing. All of that checked out.

I thought that perhaps php was not responding to end of line correctly so I saved the file in four different encodings - unicode, ANSI, unicode “bigendian” and UTF-8. No dice.

I checked to ensure that the plug-in was registered with the main blog (we are using MU) and with the author’s blog. It was registered correctly in both places.

The plug in still never worked. Moving on…

It probably would have been recommended to complete a debate in each of the person countries - with the three vast majority parties as voted for in every country at the final general election debating. Not just does it allow people to hear the policies pertaining a lot more to their country, it also stops the separatist parties from using it as more ammunition for their position of their nation being marginalised in the first location. Which is what Salmond is doing - using any perceived slight or marginalisation to reinforce his factors. Rightly or wrongly, it is what all politicians do.

A leaderboard and a wide skyscraper. I’d like to have both of them rotate Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network ads — but displaying 2 AdSense at the same time. Right now, the Rotator randomizes it so that some of the time, for example, the leaderboard will show an AdSense ad, and the skyscraper shows a YPN ad, on the same page refresh. Any way to control this?

March 4, 2010: 12:32 am

is there anyway to trigger certain Adrotate ad groups by post tag?

August 31, 2009: 4:41 am

I’m using this plugin in all of my websites.. The beauty is this will decrease down the ad blindness and users tends to click more on ads..More over other benifit is I can keep track of CTR and check which ad is performing well and remove the non performer..
My Kudos to this pligin

July 31, 2009: 1:12 pm

Are you going to do something against the guys that hijacked your pluggin name and therefore create a problem?
Since that happened, your pluggin is labeled as needed to be updated in the admin. It’s not such a big deal, but I find annoying to see that red 1. Plus if one day you decide to update your pluggin, it will create a bugg.

July 29, 2009: 9:39 am

How can I center the ads? When I put in code for
centering, the ad doesn’t center and shows up only
at the tend of the page (instead of at the end of
each post). When I have just the ad code, it presents
correctly on the page but its justified left and I’d
like it to center.

This deal is tha bomb! Thanks again for this plugin, works great.

May 6, 2009: 7:40 pm

Great plugin, downloaded and installed it easily on a number of websites.

As all my sites also run wp-cache it does act differently then usual.

In my case the banner is cached for the time wp-cache is caching a particular page (with standard wp-cache settings that is 3600 seconds). No problem there - each page loads a different banner and the banners change on reload *after* the cache is reset.

Thanks, this helped me a lot! Actually, I am researching on freelance .net projects sites from past 5-6 days but I wasnt able to find any website or company which allows us to post free projects and providing working market place for buyers and programmers, I found some sites which allowed free posting of php and other IT projects for free and number of bids started coming in from vendors but proposals weren’t so good, so is there any site you know which allows to make me post free projects and containing thousands of quality vendors and programmers to bid on my project? Please email me!

Hi great plugin! However after reading about 20 of the posts above I don’t think I’ll find the answer i’m looking for.
I’ve done EVERYTHING you mentioned and it doesn’t work at all. :(

i have done the following:
- installed the plugin and activated it
- created a text file under the wp-content folder as asked NOT THE PLUG-IN folder
- name the text file leftads.txt
- filled it with one link like this: *CHECKED the links and they do work
- put the codes into the sidebar.php as

and it still doesn’t work… it just shows up on my profile as:

please help. I’m stuck :(

The plugin works wondrous! Its a great addition to my blog site.

October 17, 2008: 12:45 am

Hi. Nice plug-in. Thanks

October 14, 2008: 4:56 am

Well for some reason the code did not show up properly. I have uploaded the code to a text file at http://www.nevisblog.com/code.txt

October 14, 2008: 4:53 am

OK, maybe I am a bit dense, or maybe it is just too late to figure this out, but I can’t seem to figure this out. I am using WP 2.32, no I don’t want to upgrade yet.

Here is what I have done.

1. Uploade plugin to the plugin directory and activated it.

2. Created two text files (ending in .txt) with the ad code inside, both are 160×600. One for Chitika, and one for Linkshare.

3. I uploaded both of thes files to the content directory.

4. Now here is where I get a bit confused. In my sidebar.php file at present I am running an 160×600 “standalone ad”. This is where I would like to have the roating ads appear. Obviuosly I have to delete the “standalone ad” cide first, but is this where I put you pkugin code to call the two ads?

5. If so, what code do I use to call the two ads which are called linkshare-160×600-ad.txt and chitika-160×600-ad.txt

6. You state that I can choose to have one ad show up more than another, something like a 70/30 split. Definitely cant figure that one out. Below you can see a snippet of code from my sidebar.php file where at the moment I am running Chitika ad.

<!–
ch_client = “Nevis1″;
ch_width = 160;
ch_height = 600;
ch_non_contextual = 1;
ch_default_category = “200001″;
var ch_queries = new Array( );
var ch_selected=Math.floor((Math.random()*ch_queries.length));
if ( ch_selected

I hope I am not too long-winded in this post, but I like to be as clear as possible.

Thanks for any input

and tried it. That displayed the code, and not the ads. Then I went in and removed the first space between the bracket and the ‘?’ and it made it work.

Hope this helps if anyone gets in a pickle. Thanks for the great plugin!

Hi, I like your plugin very much. The problem I have is that I don´t want the ads to repeat. For example, I have added 3 times the code to my sidebar to display 3 ads. I then added 5 ads to my ads.txt. I would like to see a random selection of 3 ads without repetitions but sometimes I get the same ad twice or even three times. Is there any way to avoid this?

Best regards,
Paula

June 13, 2008: 3:32 am

It has no limitations as such.

June 12, 2008: 8:16 pm

is this limited to 9? the AdRotator?

June 9, 2008: 11:39 pm

I’m still hoping and praying someone will post a hack or update that allows more than 9 Ad Rotator widgets. I can’t think of a reason why it would be limited to 9 and I could use a hundred of them.

Any ideas or hacks anyone?

June 9, 2008: 10:22 am

getad() should be called in your template and not from the ad file itself. The ad file is just plain html.

June 9, 2008: 10:09 am

Hi i have read and re read the instruction and upgraded to wordpress 2.5 - I have installed the plugin and activated - Uploaded my txt file with the ads in and put the following line into my header file
obviously changing the name and i get the following message :-

June 3, 2008: 5:02 am

Help, I can’t get it to work.. what’s the actual function to call the code?

banner’); ?>

but it doesn’t call the function. It just displays

This should work with .php extension if I edit your plugins file and change the extension to .php in your code right? If it has a php extension, I can change the path and have the sponsors.php in my theme’s directory, then be able to edit it in wordpress without using an FTP software. All I have to do is modify your code to get it from the template’s path and change txt to php. create a php file with my ads to be rotated in it, and upload it to my current themes folder. then in wordpress’s edit theme section, I could just modify the banners to be rotated… seems like it would work, gonna give it a shot

Simple and works great! Thanks for the great plugin

February 26, 2008: 10:47 pm

> Is this the way the plugin is supposed to work?
No. The plugin displays the ads randomly. So while in a small sample size not all ads will show up in your specified frequency, for large sample size (number of hits) the ads will show up in the frequency you have specified. Remember that each line of ad has an equal probability to show up. So to show up an ad more often, specify it more times.

February 26, 2008: 6:09 pm

Great plugin! I have it all set up and working, and I have a quick question. Here’s how my .txt file is set up:

I have 32 lines of code (32 ads). Some of them are duplicates, depending on how much the company has paid. Example: someone who has paid the minimum has one ad in rotation and the number of ads in the rotation increases the more they paid.

My assumption was that the plugin would go through each line in the .txt file (even if in random order) before going through it again. If line 12 was hit, it wouldn’t pull it up again before hitting every other line of code. That doesn’t seem to be the case.

To test, I refreshed the page 58 times. Many ads were displayed more times than shown in the code, and two ads never showed up at all.

The ads that didn’t show up are uploaded and referenced correctly, and there wasn’t a time when nothing was displayed, so it’s not that it’s just not seeing those ads, it’s more like it just never gets to those ads.

Is this the way the plugin is supposed to work?

Again, I love how simple the plugin was to setup, thanks for making it! And thanks for any help!

Hi -

First, thank you very much for providing this plugin. It’s really very handy, not just for ads, but also for displaying random images with links.

I am however, having a problem getting it to display in a sidebar. The sidebar is widget enabled and I’m trying to “sneak” in the call to the file via a textbox widget with a header over it. I’m assuming this is not possible?

Thanks in advance for any assistance - and again, thank you for providing the plug-in.

You are making great job! Very usefull plugin, thank you, Angsuman!

January 27, 2008: 5:25 am

Thanks for the compliments.

Can you explain the problem in more detail?
Any code that you can fit in one line works.

January 26, 2008: 3:29 pm

Nevermind… after spending several hours messing with it, a two second tweak fixed it.

Doh!

January 26, 2008: 3:22 pm

Angsuman,

Thanks so much for creating this! It works like a charm for the most part, but as several users above have mentioned, it has a minor flaw in that it skips banner loads.

Normally this wouldn’t matter that much, but in my case when it does skip load and leaves a blank space, it screws up the formatting of the header navigation.

Is there any way to keep it from skipping banner loads and leaving a blank space?

Thanks,
-Eric

Hi. I like the idea of this plugin, but what I really need is something like a “gallery” of ads (images w/links) that displays in the sidebar based on category. So, for Category A I might have 5 ad images, for Category B I might have 3 ad images, and so on. For pages/posts without categories, or if there is no gallery for a category, I would like a standard Adsense skyscraper. Can this plugin be hacked to accomplish this? Thanks!

Interesting plugin.
Do you have any plugin like this for Blogger?

I have tried creating a custom Ads Rotator, and have put it on my blog. I have used very primitive techniques, and I do not know if its really effective.

A brief sample of the code can be seen the following address :
http://kamal.dom20.com/2007/12/ads-rotator.html

Could anyone tell me if this will work well, or should I scrap it?

Thanks

Will the Ad rotator change the order of multiple ads in a side bar column.

The ads are all the same width.

I don’t want one ad displayed with each page loading,
rather I want half a dozen or 8 ads to all dispaly but be in a different order upon each page loading.

I do agree this is a cool plugin but I personally dont recommend people who are new into affiliate marketing to use this.

Reason: You will be disappointed if you spread your gains(profit) into many places. Focus on one. Why not rotate different ads of the same merchant to give you max. impact on sales.

Cheers!
p.s: a tracker would be good to know which ads get clicked most.

Great plug-in! One quick question: For some reason when I link my ads, it is adding my domain in front of the target domain.

So instead of the link being:
http://www.targetdomain.com

I am getting this:
http://www.mydomain.comhttp://www.targetdomain.com

This is the syntax I am using in my txt file:

Any thoughts?

Works like a charm. Thank you very much!!

June 9, 2007: 3:17 pm

Not really …. instant upgrade is doing all in the right way …. Adrotator should have an option to be included in the feed without changing the feed php file ….

I know that is possible, “Buy me a beer”, “Socialize” and others do it. They get included in the content of the post and automatically get added to the feed.

Unfortunately I am not able to do it myself …

And don’t get me wrong, I love your plugin, that’s why today I went thru the pain of changing owners and all for another blog …. I rather do all of it that not using it ….

But I am trying to save me some time here …. :D

June 9, 2007: 7:13 am

@homebrelobo
The problem is with instant upgrade plugin. You should really contact them for a solution.

June 7, 2007: 4:22 am

Instant Upgrade works great in the blog itself, but if you modify the rss feed files to include it, you have to edit them manually.

And once you use Instant Upgrade, those files (feed-rss2.php in WP 2.2) have apache as the owner. That means that in order to edit them, you have to manually change the owner (chown) to yourself, edit them, and change it again to apache for next time you use Instant Upgrade ….

How to split single posts into many pages?

May 31, 2007: 6:40 pm

homebrelobo, I use Instant Upgrade too. So that’s the culprit that keeps Ad Rotator from working?

May 29, 2007: 2:04 pm

The problem I have is that I use Instant Upgrade, that updates WP to the latest version of WP, but do not let you change the files afterwards (apart from the template).

Also, WP 2.2 modifies wp-rss2.php’s structure, so previous mods do not work.

Is there anyway that adrotator could be added to the feeds without editing the wp-rss2.php file ?

Thanks

Hi there,

I’ve been using this tool to great success on http://www.thestonewailer.com for two months.

I use it for ads, but also I use it to rotate in cd reviews, indie musician gig dates, and relevant info related to the site.

What I’m wondering is: is there a way to change the top part of my sidebar, where it talks about Gonzo journalism, to rotate with a mission statement, or other content that I would like to randomly load at the top of the sidebar with each refresh?

Thanks,

[...] Ad Rotator This plug-in allows me to rotate all sorts of ads into the same ad location. When I got canned from Adsense, I decided to start employing some different ad strategies besides just finding a new ad provider. I love this plug-in. You can do some cool things with your site with this one- rotate in horizontal and vertical ads, for instance. Only downer, the text file you must keep on your server that holds the text for the different ads is rather cryptic and crude. If you want to delete some ads, you have to look at ad ID codes and what not, and be careful you only delete the right line of ad code. [...]

I have a question. I’m currently using your ad rotator plugin for two types of ads. One is to rotate a series of leaderboard ads at the bottom of my website, and the other is for skyscraper ads at my sidebar.

I’ve noticed that when I refresh, sometimes one or both of the ads are missing. They just don’t show up. I’m wondering if there’s a minimum number of ads that need to be in the rotation, or else they get skipped over sometimes. I have about 4 or 5 for each ad type.

I’m also wondering if maybe it’s because ad rotator can’t handle certain ads, such as those with Flash or use javascript.

I hope I’ve just overlooked something and it can be fixed right away. Thanks very much.

October 23, 2006: 3:40 pm

Just wondering if anyone could tell me which file to add the “” to if you want your ads to be displayed after each post? There are many editable files within Wordpress. Which one do you edit and where in that file do you add to show up after each post?

I tried adding it to the “Main Index” file which is very short. It did work if I added this after the footer info, but if I tried to place it after the post info, it messed up the whole site.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

i think i have an idea why the google adsense ads don’t show at first even after correct installation. google self says that it takes up to 48 hours before the search robots have scanned your page and by this action enabling AdSense to work. no search robot, no adsense ads. it might be as easy as that. after an afternoon of searching the error, i now will fix myself a cup of tea and wait to see if i’m right :)

@Nigel
You are right. WordPress replaces simple single quotes with styled quote marks which creates problems for anyone doing simple cut-paste from the blog. I have replaced them with double quotes which should work fine with cut-paste.

September 5, 2006: 9:21 pm

I have created a how-to on setting up Ad-Rotator with specific instruction on getting Google’s Ad-Sense working.

You can find the how-to @ http://www.davehildebrand.com/archives/36

Nigel
August 16, 2006: 10:51 am

OK, sorted it. I think it’s absolutely essential that you make sure everyone understand that you need to use flat text quote marks and not styled quote marks from word-processor type documents which I suspect you have in your example code somewhere that I copied. Other than that it’s great, so thanks very much.

1. You blog url
2. Your text file name
3. Exact code you have included

August 9, 2006: 7:35 pm

Still not showing, darn it and sorry. You’ll have to take it for granted that I copied your code line directly from your manual and that the php call line structure is identical to yours, with the appropriate substitution of the file name as you show.

August 9, 2006: 7:32 pm

oh picklejuice the code didn’t come thru, sorry. Here, let me try this:

Remove the Xs and dashes replace the single quote. (How did you get your code lines to show?)

August 9, 2006: 7:26 pm

Thx for the tips but I have that code in place already as you have indicated. Copied it straight from your manual:

where I have removed appropriate question marks for the php start & end code for this post and topbanner is the txt file I created as per your sample.

Any other suggestions as to what I may have missed?

August 7, 2006: 2:13 am

Please make sure you have included:
<php echo getad(’banner_ad_text_file’) ?>

banner_ad_text_file is the text file name without the txt extension.

August 6, 2006: 8:37 am

dont copy sample code in this post.

August 3, 2006: 9:13 am

Hi - I downloaded your adrotator script to my WP (v2.0.4) blog and I cannot get it to display. I’ve tried it in the header and footer templates, I’ve read thru the manual, looked thru WordPress forums for help and I can’t see what’s wrong. The txt file is created & fine, saved under /wp-content with simple banners and their links one per line, the formatting of the div section is fine as I’ve tested that with independent ads. The script is activated in the plugin area, the insertion script is copied directly from your manual with the appropriate file name. But nothing shows and when you view the source of the page, there is no code showing up for your script. The div tag (topads) it sits in is empty. Any ideas on what’s happening here? I’d really like to make use of this script as it sounds perfect for what I’m needing.

First, I’d like to say thanks.

I have a question. I’m one of the theme builder of WordPress, if you let me I’d like to include your plugin with my theme with Japanese manual with it.(I’m Japanese)

Let me know if you’re fine with it.

Thanks!

I read the blog, comments and manual. put it up, turned it on and it worked first time! This was a breeze to put together and I am a code novice. Of course I have a question. I have five banner ads on my site that I need to rotate through so that the top most ad is random. I can load your “code call” five times, but sometimes that ends up with two duplicate ads showing at the same time. People come to my site 2 or three times a week — I want to sell the fact that there ad is always “up” and that the order of ads is random.

Is this possible?

I’m trying to use this with AdSense. I’ve read everything on this site. I’ve seen the example.txt file.

I must be missing something. In my template, I have the google code for formatting the text ads. At the end of the format code I call the plugins php function. In my txt file I put the line from google. I’m getting the same ads. No matter how many lines of ads I put. If I remove the script line the urls show up but are not formatted.

Also, how do I get the correct tags for the google ads I want. They are hidden in other sites.

May 10, 2006: 12:55 pm

I’ve uploaded the file, my text file is here:
http://www.phonereviews.mywebhut.com/blog/wp-content/myads.txt
I’ve added the code “php echo getad(’myads’);” inside the tags. I still can’t seem to get it to work. I’ve added the tags inside the index.php of my themes folder.
Thanks for the help…

I downloaded, installed, and set up AdRotator today. I use it to display random ads on a local Web site, wickenburg-az.com. It does the job nicely, although I did have some trouble piecing together the instructions I needed. I wrote a quick How To article on my personal blog that explains what I did.

Thanks for the plugin.

Hi! I’ve been using AdRotator for some time with no complaints (and much praise!) but now I’ve finally run into a question.

I want to include two different Google Referrer ads– one for Firefox, one for Picasa. I added the script to display the ads in my template, and I have the
line in my .txt file.

I also have my own banner (for my book “Brave Men Run”) in rotation.

The “Brave Men Run” and the Picasa ads rotate no problem… but the Firefox ad doesn’t seem to be in the rotation. Is it not possible to have two different Google programs rotate in the same spot?

Many thanks!

Great plugin. I’m experiencing some difficulty though.

I’m trying to use it to rotate a series of Amazon Associate links that use the tag.

I’m using WP 2.2 w/ the default them w/ widgets enabled. I tried putting the php call inside a text widget in the Sidebar–no effect. I got it to work a bit but the variables inside the link cut off the rest of the widgets that were below it in the sidebar.

So then I put the php call in the bottom of the Sidebar.php theme page, just before the final tag. It worked about 60% of the time but made the rest of the site unstable, esp. in IE (where the reloads were particularly catastrophic).

I’m wondering if it has to do w/ the tag unless you have some advice about better placement in the Sidebar.php or a little code to wrap it in. You can access my ad file here.

Thanks again.

March 26, 2006: 10:17 pm

You are misunderstanding. Displaying of pages is determined by the template pages in your theme.

You have to make changes there. Please check the files in your theme and WordPress documentation in codex to understand how it works.

You don’t have to worry about cache for making any changes.

So can I access folder ‘public_html/wp-content/cache/id/pages/specific_page.php ‘ ,and add [] code to “middle area” of page ?

Thanks

March 26, 2006: 11:04 am

You may just need to add it to one file in your template. It depends on where you want to show the ad. For example if you want to show it in sidebar then add it to sidebar.php.
If on the main page then add it to index.php etc.

Hope you get the idea.

I got the plugin to work correctly. However, I have two ad banners displaying on my blog at the same time: A leaderboard and a wide skyscraper. I’d like to have both of them rotate Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network ads — but displaying 2 AdSense or 2 YPN ads at the same time.

Right now, the Rotator randomizes it so that some of the time, for example, the leaderboard will show an AdSense ad, and the skyscraper shows a YPN ad, on the same page refresh. As I understand it, this violates both networks’ TOS.

Any way to control this?

Dear Sir,

You rock. Thank you so much for the sample.txt youp posted. It helped me figure out little nuances and such and was greatly appreciated.

What would make this plugin really easy– maybe:

1. We upload and activate the php.plugin
2. It creates a control panel under ‘manage’
3. It allows us to name and create a .txt file in the default location; as well as a default position/folder for images
4. It offers fields for html, descriptions, and images

This may be asking a lot, but what I’m trying to do is reduce the potential of error for the novice like myself

******************

But THANK YOU thank you THANK YOU for you help in this matter.

******************

There isn’t a way to make this somehow work for a PHPboard, is there? (I managed to get the javascript thing to work there.)

October 10, 2005: 8:00 pm

@Jerome and others
> You then ask me to create a .txt file
I mean create a text file with .txt extension.

> “Each of these files contains one or more lines. Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.” This is very vague. Lines of what? What ad code? What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.

> Lines of what?
“Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.”

> What ad code?
Your advertisers like Google / Chitika etc. gives your certain text to insert in your webpage / template. That is commonly referred to as ad code.

> What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.
It depends on your advertiser. See the example below for my advertisers code.

> My best suggestion: create and post an example banners.txt file, with example ad code in it.

You got it - sample adrotator file - adrotator_example.txt

> My personal request is that you DON’T force us to identically sized banners.

I don’t. You can have any number of banners of any sizes; all different even.

Not only that you can use them in as many locations as you want; you can also have certain ads display with more frequency than others etc.

Jerome Howard
October 10, 2005: 7:16 pm

Jerome

It changes ad with each viewing of each page. You can reload the page to test it.

No. AFAIK it is not recommended by Google and many Ad providers as it leads to artificial increase in page impressions. Check the TOS before you go that route.
