All comments get nuked by Blackhole option on blocking open proxy lists in WordPress 1.5 (Strayhorn)
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkThursday, March 17, 2005
It was surprising to find no comment spam after installing WordPress 1.5, noting that I haven’t enabled CAPTCHA with this upgrade. However I soon realized that I wasn’t receiving any normal comments too on very commentable articles.
I realized yesterday the culprit was this option in WordPress: Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies. under Discussion sub-section.
If you have it checked it prevents any comments whatsoever (even from myself) from appearing in the blog!
This is a serious bug in WordPress 1.5 release (Strayhorn).
Wordaround: Disable this option for now.

The problem exists, sure, but it’s not exactly a blacklist issue. For the longest time, my installs worked just fine with that option checked. When we moved all the blogs to a new server though, WP (and SpamKarma) started using the local server address as it’s blacklist source instead of the actual blacklist sources - which caused every comment to be blacklisted. In the end, this actually turned out to be a Windows problem, not a WordPress one, and related to PHP. |

Minna That is terribly surprising. I have tested beyond doubt that the problem exists. And I am not the only one. Are you using the release version 1.5 (Strayhorn) or are you using some nightly build? |

Oddly, I’ve had the checkbox checked and I haven’t noticed any problems whatsoever (and yes, even though I don’t get lots of comments, I’ve got comments while it’s been checked |
