Take a look at some of the key additions that will come with the iOS4 software update that Apple released on June 21. We decided to go into the finer details of iOS 4 the new features and polish that might not make it to Apple product pages, but might still make the day.
Home Screen
To begin with we discuss the iPhone Home screen. You might know clearly about the major new features such as folders for organizing apps and support for wallpaper backgrounds. We have found a couple of more perks. The spotlight screen now provides both “Wikipedia” and “Web” options at the bottom of your search results. In case you don’t find what you are looking for locally these are two easy launchpads for taking the query. You might already know about the major new features such as folders for organizing apps and support for wallpaper backgrounds.
Folders in a nutshell
Folder in iOS 4 is a group of apps that you can access by tapping a single icon on the your iPhone’s Home screen. After tapping a folder that sports an icon, it includes a miniature versions of the icons of the apps inside. With a name intended to describe the folder’s contents — the dock fades and slides down and the main Home-screen area fades and slides up to make room for view of the folder’s contents. The view shows the name and full-size icon of each app. Try to tap on each app to launch it or just tap anywhere outside the folder area to close the folder.
Size of folder
Each of the folders can accommodate 12 apps. Users might consider the 180 icon spaces on the iPhone 11 visible Home screens. Users might also be able to place folders in the dock –iOS 4 folders feature that allows you to view up to 2,160 apps! Users can also install more that number. They don’t
Creating and editing folders
To create a folder enter the iPhone standard Home-screen editing mode by tapping and holding any app icons that begin to shake. Look at the delete (X) button in the upper-left corner of non-stock apps. It drags the apps that you wanna include in the folder onto any other app that you want to include in your folder onto any other app that you want to include. The Home Screens might fade and you might see the folder display that is still in editing mode that contains both apps.
- Users might also see a folder-name field. It is automatically filled based on the App Store category of one of the first two apps in the folders. Users might use a different name just tap in the name field and then edit the name field and then edit the name.
- Press the Home button to exit mode.
- To add another app folder
- Enter editing mode again and then drag the desired app onto the folder icon
- Repeat it until you have added all the apps that you need to.
- Press the Home Button to finish editing. In case you drag an app onto the folder and hold it for a couple of seconds, the folder will open, still in edit mode. It places the new app exactly where you want it within the folder.
Taking Advantage of Folders
One of the major benefits of folders is that promiscuous downloaders could now see more than 180 apps at a time. The casual app users might be able to reap rewards from the new feature. For now you might be able to group similar apps in ways other than screens. The more obssessive-compulsive among us would no longer be agonized with the 16 apps that best fits in particular home screen. Instead you might use all your transit or transpiration apps in one folder, travel guides in another and food apps in the third. In this process use only three spots on the Home Screen.
Managing folders in iTunes
The capability to create and edit folders is not limited to iOS 4 itself. Users might have been able to manage the installed apps when user sync with iTunes on your computer. The iTunes 9.2 allows you to organize your iOS 4 apps and folders that are used for your mouse and keyboard.
iPhone or iPod touch might be connected to your computer. The Apps view in iTunes 9.2 looks and functions much as before. You can choose the apps to sync to the iPhone as well as decide about the synced apps that are organized on and between screens.
Multitasking
Users can remove the app from the multitasking bar at the bottom of the display. Just tap and hold on an icon around on the Home screen. Tapping the minus immediately closes the app with no confirmation, warning or ability to reverse the choice. To be sure that the app either automatically saves the work or you might be truly done using it.
Phone
In this update the key apps and features of iOS the Phone app got little attention in this update. On iPhone 4 the FaceTime button appears to have knocked off the Hold button on the in-call screen. The “End Call” button has been re-labled to simply “End” and the in-call background image now stretches all the way to the bottom of the screen.
At the head of the pack when it comes to major changes in iOS 4, we covered them in the main review and our hands-on Mail piece. The app also got quite a bit spit and polish that needs a mention.
In case a message is from a contact in the device’s Address Book and a picture is assigned. That picture will appear to the right of the subject when viewing that message. When you start drafting a message in Mail or any other app, just hit the Cancel,
- The new menu features a loud, red “Delete Draft” button to help make sure that you know what you are doing.
- Mail gains some custom e-mail service features. It now supports the MobileMe aliases and archiving in Gmail both unique features to their respective services.
- The mail also gained dome new preferences in the settings app. Under the Mail, Contacts and Calenders pane.
Settings
iOS 4 comes without a healthy dose of new preference and rejiggering. Under the General pane, you can get a “Large Text” option to increase next size in Mail, Contacts, Messages and Notes. With the Spotlight Search you can toggle and reorder search results it was moved and renamed from General > Home > Search Results and it now includes an entry for messages.
The General > Home options, has been removed. In the previous iOS versions the Home pane allows you to assign different actions for double-pressing the Home button (such as Camera, iPod controls, Search and so on). On devices that supports multitasking, double-pressing the Home button is now hardwired to open the app switcher.
Under General >International, a new Calender option allows you to pick between using Gregorian, Japanese, Buddhist, and Republic of China calendars. The internation Assist option under General > Phone has been moved from the top of the pane to below the “Calls” options area.
The messages a number of new preference: the Group Messaging option allows come back to the original, single thread that you created when sending the first message. Instead of individual SMS entries for each contact in the group. The Character Count option that can now be displayed. The iPhone will display SMS of any lenght as a coherent message. However the carriers and most other phones still break them up into 160-charecter message. The carriers and most other phones still break them up into 160 charecter messages. Some SMS enabled services such as Twitter enfore a low charecter count. Interestingly the character count only appears above the Send button, when the message is stretched to the second line.
