Gem of a spam

Excerpt from the best spam of 2004:

In 1977, Kaplan Education LTD was sued by the Federal Trade Commission at Federal Trade Commission v. Kaplan Education, LTD, et al, 433 F. Supp. 989, *; 1977 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 15398, **; 1977-2 Trade Cas (CCH) P61, 541, for false, misleading, and deceptive representations. Thereafter, the company was sold to the Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO) and now operates as Kaplan, Inc., Kaplan Higher Education Corporation, Kaplan University, Kaplan College, Concord University School of Law, Kaplan Educational Center, Inc., and other.

“Regarding the complainant’s position that an admission advisor asked race specific questions of him and his wife in the fall of 2000, the complainant’s wife asserts in her written statement that the advisor requested an interview during which she asked her about her race, the complainant’s race, and the race of their children.”

Why was it important for the law school to know our race, having already accepted me for a 2000 start?

Why did the law school rescind the 2000 acceptance after discovering my race?

I received an innovative spam from first_real_online_law_student@yahoo.com aka kstreetfriend@yahoo.com aka kstreetfriend

The story is about discrimination by some online law school. It is full of legal jargon and tales of discrimination. Interestingly there is no point in sending such an email to me and also to other bloggers who are clearly not in a position to help him.

Identical post is made to different weblogs with different email address of the sender, couple of them are noted above. This is a clear indicator for spam.

The email was sent from 64.12.116.139, AOL’er from Virginia located on or near Manassas.

Looking at the legal jargons and case description it is clear that he has some sense to understand that blog-world doesn’t have much say in the legal arena.

For the above-stated reasons a formal investigation is requested.

What makes you think I or other bloggers are the right person for the job.

The post made through Captcha which implies it is not an automated email. My second layer of defense caught him and placed him in moderation queue.

The email makes less and less sense as you read on and sounds incoherent towards the end.

Remember the time machine spammer? This looks like another wave of such intellectual spammers. The purpose could be playing a practical joke and/or harvesting quality email address and/or leading to some elaborate scam.

According to the New York Times: Recently, a number of for-profit colleges have faced inquiries, lawsuits and other actions calling into question the way they inflate enrollment to mislead/increase the value of their parent company’s stock.

In the last year, the Career Education Corporation of Hoffman Estates, Ill., has faced lawsuits, from shareholders and students, contending that, among other things, its colleges have inflated enrollment numbers. The company acknowledged that it was under investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In February 2004, F.B.I. agents raided 10 campuses run by ITT Educational Services of Carmel, Ind., looking for similar problems.

Kaplan is wholly own by the Washington Post Company. I provide the S.E.C., Department of Education, and federal courts information that appears to prove Kaplan inflated the Concord School of Law enrollment, telling investors that the “flagship” of its higher education division has as many as 600 to 1000 or more students.

Why didn’t the Justice Department and S.E.C. included Kaplan in their investigation?
