How does website update affect Google Page Rank
By Partho, Gaea News NetworkThursday, December 31, 2009
There are several misconceptions regarding how a updating a website could affect the Page Rank. Essentially Page Rank for any page on a site determines its relevance or importance in Google. This is one of the factors that determines, which page will appear first in Google search results. Page Rank is a specific metric that is allocated to each page of the site. The number lies between 0 to 9. It is thought to be exponential i.e, 4 is 10 times better than 3. Page Rank is primarily based on the number of in-links leading to the page. Further, page rank is also influenced by reputation of the site and relevance of one site to another. It is clear that changing content through an update could have an effect on Page Rank. Since it can completely change the context of the page and its relevance with respect to sites that linked to it. Let’s delve in to various aspects of Page Rank to find out how it is affected by updates.
It is evident that Page Rank is affected by incoming links from other sites that find your site’s content interesting.
While restructuring a site, changing platform to Cold Fusion to ASP .NET or changing domain, make sure you apply the appropriate 301 redirect for every page url that has changed after the update. This will inform Google that the page has been moved permanently. Google would acknowledge the change and maintain the page rank.
Obviously, using a blog to add new content on a regular basis helps to improve the Page Rank, given that your site and your new pages are optimized. Google is pays a lot of attention to fresh content on the web. It important to ensure that the content is not humanized. This shows updating the content could affect the Page Rank.
Updating the page names/urls or domains can directly lead to loss of Page Rank.
According to some people, the number of incoming links primarily affect the page rank. But, it’s the quality of the inbound links that will help increase your Page Rank. For instance a quality link from CNN or BBC would overpower several links from PR blogs.
Larry Dearing, Owner and Senior Project, Manager at Web Marietta, says that website page updates should negatively affect page rank, if the url that has been indexed by search engines or content text gets away from the targeted words - Title, Description and Keyword meta tags.
Google Page ranks depends on the change and how often these are implemented. It looks at relevance of information based on the site and pages and rankings. Updating a page to make it interesting and compelling will increases its chances of being linked, in turn this will better the Page Rank.
Next time you update you site keep in mind the above mentioned of Page Rank

If your site doesn’t necessarily need to be international, then you also consider buying a domain for your own country instead of .com – .de for Germany (Deutschland), or a co.uk for the UK, for example. |
