Beware of Firefox TabMix .2 Extension
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkTuesday, May 10, 2005
It slowed my Firefox considerably. Whenever I opened a new tab, closed one there would be a delay of 10-12 seconds! It is that bad. Even loading a page at some point stops everything else.
Firefox would frequently consume 95-100% of the CPU and appear to be hung. It almost made me think to go back to IE. The time appeared to be geometrically proportional to the number of opened tabs.
Finally I uninstalled it and things are back to normal. I know of two versions of TabBrowser Extensions. I am hesitant to try them now.
If you are looking for a good Firefox experience then stay away from TabMix .2 Extension.
Update: I am using TabMix Plus 0.2.4 for 15 days now without any problems. If you are looking for TabMix functionality try TabMix Plus.

My CPU usage becomes high when Firefox opens a new window via javascript, and when I first open Firefox. What could be the reason for that? Here’s my Firefox information: Last updated: Wed, 20 Sep 2006 15:55:46 GMT * Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.0.4 Themes (6): * Breeze 1.5.3 Plugins (11): * Adobe Acrobat |

I experienced slowdowns an my fast computer just yesterday. I pinned it down to Grease Monkey…the page loading was fast again as soon as I had uninstalled it… Try uninstalling Grease Monkey and see if it changes things…you can always reinstalll it later. |

I use TabMix and 33 other extentions without any problems. I can open any number of tabs without delays or high CPU usage. At one point I remember having problems and did a clean install of Firefox and then extensions. I began with Tabmix as I consider it indispensible and added one at a time to look for problems. It worked for me and could help others. |

@BranStorm My extensions are: Let me know if you find any of the above suspicious. One thing which came to my mind is whether SessionSaver is interacting with TabMix to degrade the performance. |

Nope, it isn’t. I’m using Tabmix .2 right now and I don’t have that problem anymore. I remember having it earlier on though, but then I removed another extension and the hangups went away. Can’t remember which one however… can you list your extensions here? (there’s an extension called InfoLister that does the job if you have lots of em) |

How does your machine perform when you have 25-30 separete firefox windows open? |

TabMix is fine with 5-7 tabs. The time increases in I have a 1800 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 with 256MB RAM. |

I use TabMix .2 and I don’t have the slowdown or hanging problems. In fact, TabMix is one of the extensions I recommend most! How fast is your computer? I’m using an Athlon 64 3400+ so maybe it is actually using a lot of CPU power, and I’m just not aware of it. On the other hand, I often have so many tabs open that it takes a while to scroll through them all to find the one I’m looking for. So, if it caused a geometrically proportional slowdown compared to the number of opened tabs, I surely would have seen something. |
