Google seems to be restless in its attempts to get hold of handful of new technologies. The latest addition to its list of possession is BumpTop. BumpTop is an intuitive software that replaces your Windows desktop or Mac OS with a 3D environment. Thus help you organize your files quickly and easily.

BumpTop has a feel like of a real desktop. Unlike desktop organization that restricts people to a rigid interface; BumpTop allows users to create a digital desktop. Though you can use it as easily as its physical counterpart, the power and intelligence it applies are increased by many fold than the conventional desktop. Moreover, with BumpTop you can pile files intelligently — by project, by file type or any way you choose.

Last Friday, BumpTop has announced that “Today, we have a big announcement to make: we’re excited to announce that we’ve been acquired by Google! ” This implies that BumpTop will be no longer available for sale. The company is still offering the free version to download for the next week.

In addition to provide a slick 3D interface, BumpTop lets you resize your individual items, taking advantage of several organizational features such as piles. BumpTop also supports Multi-Touch gestures in Windows 7.

It is speculated that in future BumpTop’s technology will be used in Chrome OS and Android to bolster their interfaces. Apple is also rumored as doing research on 3D desktop environment having similar features to BumpTop.

Here’s a video which features BumpTop founder Anand Agarawala demonstrating his technology in TED Conference, 2007.
