SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Those who have got really tired of flipping the TV channels through remote controllers have reasons to rejoice. The Internet search giant has been trying for some time to venture into hitherto untapped segments. Its experiment with cell phone has yielded moderate results but Google is not to be deterred. It has reportedly teamed up with industry bigwigs like Logitech, Sony and Intel to develop a new platform for web TV. It will give the company a chance to make foray in the TV segment and reach a huge number of users.
As per the latest reports, the WebTV service of Google will run on set-top boxes that will use Intel Atom CPUs. The Os will be based on Google’s famous Android OS while Logitech will take care of the remote control. So far it sounds like a great combination. As always Google will keep its TV platform available for third-party developers so that they get the chance to develop plug ins. Sony has the hope that integrating the new service in its TV sets will help it cope with the fierce competition from rivals like LG and Samsung. However, the concerned companies have not yet released any formal announcement on the matter.
It will also benefit Intel which will be able to sell its Atom Chip to more buyers outside the netbook segment. The stocks of the companies including Google rose marginally after the news was leaked by some tech sites yesterday. This move is not exactly ground breaking, as a section of latest LCD TVs are capable of connecting to the web through Wi-Fi, according to some tech experts.
