Has there been any innovation in Computer Science in the last decade?

I was having an argument with a friend from school, I met after 20 years. His point was in the last decade or so there hasn’t been any real innovations in computer science.
He says the concept of virtual machine was there for 40 years, thin clients since mainframe days and so on. He contends that that real innovation would be when we can program without for loops, if-else & switches.
I was about to tell him about MOM (message oriented middleware) but then I remembered it was there for a long time (since 1984?). However I think significant progresses have been made in distributed computing in recent years, in application of computer science in bio-technology, language translation etc.
His argument was that most so called innovations were new applications of old and well known principles. We had to postpone our discussion for a later time as it was getting late.
What do you think? Has there been any real innovations in computer science in the last decade or so?
