Summary Box: Dell’s fiscal 4Q
PROFIT SQUEEZE: Dell Inc.’s profit sank 5 percent despite rising revenue and computer shipments in the most recent quarter. Cheap consumer PCs and higher component prices ate into net income.
TURNING AROUND: Dell said corporations started spending on technology again in the quarter after a recession-induced slump. Revenue from business segments rose 9 percent as companies replaced servers and laptops and used Dell technology services.
SLOW GOING: Yes, companies are refreshing workplace computers, but it won’t happen quickly. Dell predicts the refresh will last into 2011.
