Summary Box: Facebook’s new way to define friends

REDEFINING FRIENDSHIPS: Facebook introduced a new tool to make it easier to divide online friends into different groups so its more than 500 million users can narrow the audiences for different things that they post. For instance, one group might be composed of co-workers and others might be just family members.

COPYING DATA: Another new control will allow people to retrieve all the information they have posted on Facebook for their own personal records.

THE OBJECT: Facebook is striving to be an even more indispensible communications tool so it can sell more advertising to reach a more engaged audience.
