THE MONEY: GE and four venture capital firms are putting up $200 million to fund projects designed to improve the electric grid.

THE REASON: GE is heavily involved in “Smart Grid” technology, tools meant to improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of energy use from the power plant to the home.

THE DETAILS: Startups, entrepreneurs and researchers have 10 weeks to pitch projects. Winners will be announced in November.
