By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkThursday, December 18, 2008
Its been long since we have talked about Firefox. So today I decided to discuss with you the top 10 web development plugins for Firefox. Though I was burdened by confusion with so many in my memory, I managed to pull out with the top 10 add-ons. Hope you will like it.
1. Abduction
Abduction is a simple plug-in that lets you take a screenshot of the current webpage. This tool gives you the option to select the area you actually want to take the shot or you can take the full page (I mean FULL, from top to bottom with no pasting and no scrollbars. It saves a lot of time and is more useful than you think it is.
Abduction saves the files in JPEG and PNG.
2. Live HTTP Headers
Well, the name says it all. It’s a HTTP Header inspector. You can view HTTP headers while browsing. An absolute delight for debugging.
3. Firebug
Firebug aids greatly in inspecting DOM, CSS and JS and on-the-fly editing. That includes monitoring of the content of requests, size measuring tools (for css box lining sake) and page load time. It has famous (and useful) plugins on its own side.
Suggested:
- Yahoo’s YSlow: Great for telling where are your bottlenecks in your app. It’s based on Yahoo’s Performance Rules.
- PixelPerfect: Praise all the CSS Gods! Make the layout, export the image and use as overlay on the page to see if its all fitting the right places.
4. Del.icio.us Plugin
Del.icio.us has been a darling for all the web administrators. I hope there is no need to give it an introduction. This extension integrates your browser with Delicious (https://delicious.com), the leading social bookmarking service on the Web. It does this by augmenting the bookmarking functionality in Firefox with an enhanced experience that offers the following advantages:
- Search and browse your Delicious bookmarks
- Keep up to date on your Network and Links For You
- Access your bookmarks from any computer at any time
- Keep your bookmarks organized using tags
- Share your bookmarks with friends or anyone on the Web
- Import your existing Firefox bookmarks
5. FireFTP
FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers.
6. MeasureIT
Draw out a ruler to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a webpage. Though Firebug has taken most of its glory, still MeasureIT has always been a tool that I have loved. It is very simple to use.
7. ColorZilla
Very simply it is Just a plain color picker with an embedded color palette.
With ColorZilla you can get a color reading from any point in your browser, quickly adjust this color and paste it into another program. You can Zoom the page you are viewing and measure distances between any two points on the page. The built-in palette browser allows choosing colors from pre-defined color sets and saving the most used colors in custom palettes. DOM spying features allow getting various information about DOM elements quickly and easily.
- Webpage DOM Color Analyzer
- Analyze DOM element colors on any Web page and create a corresponding palette
- Locate elements on the page that correspond to a given color
- Find out what CSS rules specify a given color
- Save, bookmark and share the palettes
- Online Palette Viewer
- Click here for an example
- Allows viewing, bookmarking and sharing any color palette
- Provides a permalink URL that represents any set of colors
- Online Eyedropper shows colors in RGB, HSV and additional formats
- Use Full Page Zoom introduced in Firefox 3
8. Tab Mix Plus
Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox’s tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager. Very useful for those who accidentally play with tabs and there after can not control.
9. Web developer Toolbar
This is the real must-have extension. It provides useful image, javascript, css, cache and cookies handling, screen resizing (to test different resolutions), DOM element inspector, element outlining and some other really neat features.
10. Dummy lipsum
Generate “Lorem Ipsum” dummy text (from https://www.lipsum.com).
Minimum text length: 5 words.
Context menu option on form inputs (”Insert Dummy Lipsum”). This option fills automatically the selected field.
Feel free to share if you have any better in your mind.
