Will the Karma pains never end? This time it is Referrer Karma
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkFriday, June 3, 2005
I had previously complained about rather inane yet draconian anti-spam measures of Spam Karma.
Today I faced more “Karma” pains from Referrer Karma, yet another seriously annoying plugin from same source.
When I visited https://randomfrequency.net/wordpress/search-pages/ after following a link from MacManx page, it send me into an infinite loop.
The page is repeatedly reloading on both IE and Firefox.
And the message I get is:
Automatic redirection
Please click on the following link if you are not redirected automatically (sorry for the inconvenience): https://randomfrequency.net/wordpress/search-pages/
More info: Referrer Karma’s Homepage
The plugin has thus effectively disabled his/her site.
The plugin could have re-directed me to the same site I came from, if it didn’t want me to access the site. That would have achieved the same thing without this pain.
Though I have no idea why Referrer Karma would like to prevent legitimate visitors from visiting the site!
That is like throwing the baby with the bathwater.
I had posted before about my bad experiences with Spam Karma. Now I have added Referrer Karma to this list. Both of these plugins use unvalidated strong measures which lead to significant amount of false positives.
Disclaimer: I too have a Referrer Bouncer plugin. However this post is not about promoting my plugin or demoting alternatives. This is about what a plugin should and should not do.
False positives should be avoided like plague or AIDS.
