HELSINKI — Three European scientists have been named as finalists in this year’s euro1.1 million ($1.5 million) international Millennium Technology Prize awarded by Finland.
The contenders are Richard Friend from Britain for experiments in optoelectronics that have enabled the production of electronic paper and illuminating wall papers; Stephen Furber, also British, for designing microprocessors found in most mobile phones; and Michael Graetzel from Switzerland for inventions of solar cells used in renewable energy technologies.
The Technology Academy of Finland named the finalists on Wednesday. The winner, who will receive euro800,000 ($1.1 million), will be announced on June 11. The other finalists will each receive euro150,000 ($204,000).
