Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. had both been bidding for storage device maker 3Par Inc. A look at Dell’s and HP’s revenue, by product category, in the most recent fiscal year:
Dell
— Client (personal computers): $29.6 billion (56 percent of total revenue)
— Software and peripherals: $9.5 billion (18 percent)
— Servers and networking: $6 billion (11 percent)
— Services: $5.6 billion (11 percent)
— Storage: $2.2 billion (4 percent)
— Total: $52.9 billion
HP
— Personal systems (personal computers): $35.3 billion (31 percent of total revenue)
— Services: $34.7 billion (30 percent)
— Imaging and printing: $24 billion (21 percent)
— Storage and servers: $15.4 billion (13 percent)
— Software: $3.6 billion (3 percent)
— Financial services: $2.7 billion (2 percent)
— Total: $116 billion
Note: Dell’s fiscal year ended Jan. 29, 2010. HP’s fiscal year ended Oct. 31, 2009. HP’s reported revenue for the year, $114.6 billion, includes $768 million in corporate investments and excludes $1.8 billion in intersegment net revenue and other items.
