On the Call: Comcast CEO Brian Roberts

The next big trend in television could be 3-D at home. Comcast Corp.’s CEO, Brian Roberts, weighed in during a conference call Wednesday on whether consumers will be eager to buy the technology and what that would mean for cable companies.

QUESTION: There’s been a lot of excitement around 3-D, so how do you view this opportunity?

RESPONSE: The consumer electronics companies just began selling the latest generation of 3-D TVs. That said, the incremental price required to get a 3-D TV is so much less; it’s a fraction of what HD started at. So I think it will be not a big price-point adder over the next couple of years.

It does require glasses, so I don’t personally believe people are going to sit there for seven hours a day or three hours a day and watch 3-D 30 days a month. I think it is a big event strategy. If you look at what’s happened in the movie theater, movie business, they’ve been able to get a premium experience and a premium revenue for that experience and maybe there are business opportunities for us to deliver events in 3-D.

CORRECTS headlines and story to show that Comcast’s CEO made the comments, not COO.
