I Never Thought I would Say This… Commenting By Minors

One implied restriction on commenting on this site: I will allow commenting by a minor so long it it appropriate. However I will never allow displaying their emails or any other personally identifiable information in their comments. I recently received an email from a minor (as he / she says) who wants to make friends. While I am fine with that I cannot display the email (s)he provided in the body of the comment.

Right of minors

I strongly believe in the right of minors. However they do need some degree of protection from silly mistakes which can expose them to the internet community at large, with the risk that some of them may take advantage. This is something which popular networking sites like Facebook or MySpace do not properly address.

Let me know if you disagree with the above.

Nicely put BillinDetroit. I myself is an admin at a domain forum. A lot, like 70%, of our members are from 13 to 17. I have an adopted nephew whose already 14 so my “fatherly” nature extends to these members.

I don’t really encourage teens to join MySpace. I heard it’s not a nice place to be in.

There is an African proverb that goes something along the lines of “It takes a whole village to raise a child.”

This is -still- the “global village” … and we need to close ranks around our children and act against those who needlessly expose them to harm. Yeah … that definitely includes the ’social network’ sites.

When they have safely made it to adulthood, they are on their own, as we are. But until then, we are their shield.

Good post, Angsuman. I could hardly agree more.
