Now its DMV’s turn to leak personal information

A laptop from Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles was stolen with unencrypted data exposing personal information of more then 8, 900 Southern Nevada residents.

By personal information I mean everything - name, age, DOB, SSN, photographs and signatures of residents who obtained drivers licenses between November 25th and March 4th.

Paul Masto, assistant special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service office in Las Vegas, said “That’s the juicy stuff - the dates of birth, the Social Security numbers,” and “They have that information. There’s nothing we can do about that.”.

In addition to the computer, thieves took a camera, 1,700 license blanks and laminated plastic covers bearing the embossed state seal.

Authorities said the equipment could be used to manufacture licenses virtually indistinguishable from legitimate Nevada driver’s licenses.
