Summary Box: Google’s tussle with China censorship

SMACKED DOWN: China’s government responded to Google’s detour around its Internet censorship rules by blocking some of the traffic from the mainland to the company’s search engine in Hong Kong.

THE BARRIER: China relies on Internet filters dubbed the “Great Firewall” to restrict access on topics that the government considers objectionable.

FINANCIAL FALLOUT: An Internet service owed by a Hong Kong tycoon said it wouldn’t renew a Google partnership, to avoid potential government problems. Google shares fell 1.5 percent.
