Summary Box: Nokia Siemens to buy Motorola unit
THE DEAL: Motorola Inc. is selling most of its wireless networks division to Nokia Siemens Networks for $1.2 billion.
THE BUSINESS: This division supplies wireless carriers with equipment they need to connect to cell phones. Motorola isn’t a big player, but it has valuable relationships with U.S. and Japanese providers, which would help Nokia Siemens exploit those markets.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: It sets Motorola up to spin off its cell phone manufacturing operations from a business that makes police radios and bar-code scanners for government and commercial clients. That is expected to happen early next year.
