US versus India Broadband Connectivity Comparison - 50 Times Slower But Costlier

In India I can get 1Mbps from Tata Indicom / VSNL for Rs. 2500 (~ 55.55$ / month with 45Rs-1$ conversion rate) + Tax which brings it to Rs 2800 per month.

Note: Remember I am talking about unlimited connection and not metered connection that you can get cheaply. This is the best deal I got after much searching. Feel free to suggest cheaper and faster alternatives.

In USA I can get Verizon FIOS Internet with Fiber optics at the speed of 50Mbps at the rate of $42.99 / month which is approximately Rs 1934 per month for 50 times the speed.

Don’t you think internet in India is a tad overpriced? Over 50 times slower and for a higher price point really paints a poor picture about IT infrastructure in India.

With India poised to take greater role and responsibility in the new economy, having affordable and high speed internet is crucial and is the only way forward in World2.0. I am hoping with the introduction of 3G spectrum, internet speed will increase, at least for the mobile segment. However it may be ridiculously priced like iPhone 3G and fail to gain any traction.
