WordPress 2.0 & 1.5.x Hack: How to trim the fat resource hogging Admin DashBoard (Version 2)
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkMonday, April 18, 2005
I have uploaded version 2 of the WordPress 1.5 Admin DashBoard Hack which received very good reviews from users across the board. Thanks for all your feedback.
Update: This works on WordPress 1.5.x & 2.0.
Changes
The new features do not add any performance penalties over last version.
Direct access, to some commonly used functions, has been provided from the DashBoard:
- Create New Post
- Create New Page
- Manage/View Comments
- Moderate Comments - This item is shown only when there are comments to moderate. It also shows the number of comments to moderate.
I removed two extra div end-tags which may create problems with Safari browser.
I have been using this version for over a month without any problems.
To understand the rationale of this hack, please refer to the original post.
Take a look at the screenshot. If you like it, feel free to download.
Grab the index.php and drop it in your wp-admin directory, replacing the original file. You must make a backup of the original file before that (and everything else under the Sun if you so desire).
Drop me a comment/pingback/trackback if you find it useful either in this post or in the original post.
Update: You can download the latest version of WordPress Admin Dashboard replacement here.

[...] I did however notice a bug of sorts in WordPress… When going into the WordPress dashboard, it takes over 30 seconds on a new install. This appears to be due to the news feeds WordPress makes you view every time you open the administration panel. Problems are not without fixes, however. I found a very useful hack that brought my load time down to a normal speed. If anyone is interested in using the hack on their own WordPress implementation, it is available at this link. [...] |

Hey, All right cool. Then I guess dont worry about it. Though, do you plan on doing the same for 1.6? Could you make it a plugin perhaps? Thanks again, Will |

I will look into it. Though I suspect that any solution will change with soon to be released WordPress 1.6 version. |

Well just one issue. Write and Comments catogries ib the dashboard (Under Activity on the right side menu) shows up for users who do not have access to write and comments. So can you fix this or tell me how I can please? Thanks a lot, |

Wow! It’s great! Now if I just had a way link a notepad under the drafts area of Dashboard. Then I could jot my topic ideas that have not yet become drafts. Or maybe that would be best linked to the “write post” page. Anyway, I love your Dashboard hack. |

Hoo-ha! Very cool. Was thinking of ding this same thing… I really disliked having those blog feeds on there… In fact, my initial thought was: “Who the hell are they that they get this?” … if I could have at least customized them… Tg |

That’s a very good idea. Now you can get the feeds when you want it, not pushed down your throat |

I renamed the original ‘index.php’ as ‘oldindex.php’ Then, at the hacked Dashboard version 2 after: I added the following line: This way I can switch back and forth the original Dashboard and the information it carries. |
